THE ORIGINS OF MORT
In the year 2000, Mort (our namesake) couldn't find anywhere in her small country town to buy a decent cake tin. Outraged, she decided to take matters into her own hands and make sure such a thing wouldn't ever happen to anyone else.
So, she opened a kitchen shop!
When I purchased the shop from Mort in 2015, I thought long and hard about what new name to give it. We live in a wonderfully energetic, artistic and social community that really cares about growing, cooking and sharing good food with family and friends.
I wanted a name that would not only tell everyone exactly what our shop was about but a name that would put a smile on everyone's face.
I'd often heard people say, "I'm just going up to Mort's" or "I'm going to see what great new stuff Mort's got instore" or "Think I'll try the kitchen shop; Mort's sure to have it".
Brainstorming at lunch one day, a dear friend of mine suggested, "How about 'Mort and Pestle"!
"Perfect!" I replied.
A DECADE ON...
… we are humbled to still have local customers from those early days still refer to us as “the kitchen shop”, since then there have been some changes. Woodend and the Macedon Ranges has grown. Not surprisingly, folks from afar constantly travel through and fall in love with our beautiful mountainside community.
The Mort & Pestle space has also grown; in 2021, we relocated from our original address, one number to the left. That’s right, we are literally next door to the original shop that was established by Mort over 2 decades ago. We love our new space; it’s an extension of our personality and love for all things cooking and entertaining!
FOOD: THE GREAT CONNECTOR
Each member of the Mort & Pestle team is beyond passionate about food, cooking and entertaining. Each item on our shelves has a story, a personal connection and a purpose.
We know the dinner table is a special place where friends and family gather and wonderful moments are shared. So, we stock everything you need to get those who matter most around your table for great meals and good times.
Whether it's a small table set for two or a long table set to feed an army, whether it's breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner, food tastes better when it's home-cooked and shared with passion and style.
