Isn't the smell of freshly baked homemade pies straight out the oven one of the most mouth watering smells there is . . . I'm literally drooling while sitting here at the keyboard.

Add a generous scoop of mushy peas and I'm in heaven.

Have you tried mushy peas? My super easy recipe is below.
I appreciate that it is springtime and we should be getting excited about cous cous salads with green goddess dressings. Dusting down the BBQ making sure the gas bottle is filled ready for that first weekend of perfectly warm evenings.

But . . . that smell of golden flakey pastry, with a little bit of delicious gravy that has escaped and is maybe slightly over cooked and extra 'caramelisey' is just too good to resist!

While the pies are hot, we plop a generous dollop of mushy peas on top and enjoy.

Mushy Peas:

  • In a large pot of boiling salted water, pour in a 1kg packet of frozen peas.
(Make sure there Aussie or NZ grown peas - they're the best!)
  • Bring them to the boil and then let them simmer for 10 minutes if you plan on using a blender or food processor. OR
  • Let them simmer for 20 mins if you plan or using a masher or fork.
(Personally I like using a masher because I don't want a super smooth puree - I want smashed up mushy goodness!)
  • Add a generous dob of butter (1-2 tbsp) and black pepper to taste, and mix up well. They shouldn't need any more salt but add if you like.
