We were first introduced to this delightful treat while living in Canada. At the time, our kids were at an age where camping was pure fun—filled with daytime adventures and restful nights under the stars. We camped in nearly every national park along the eastern side of the USA and Canada.

During our visit to Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, we set up our campsite next to a family with children similar in age—ranging from 6 to 12 years old. It took just about 15 minutes for the kids to bond and become instant camping buddies. Naturally, as parents met each other, we quickly realized we shared common interests since we were all enjoying camping in a glorious national park.

As dinner wrapped up, it was time for dessert! The designated fire pits were perfect for roasting marshmallows. Our new friends were doing the same, however, there seemed to be something special happening around their campfire! Curious about what they were doing differently, we struck up a conversation. Being Aussies, they graciously forgave our ignorance—after all, any true national park enthusiast should know about this classic treat!

In essence, a S'more is a delicious sandwich made of toasted marshmallows and chocolate nestled between graham crackers (which are pronounced ‘gram’). If graham crackers aren’t available, digestive biscuits make an excellent substitute. Once you start indulging in these gooey delights, it's hard to stop at just one; hence the name evolved from "I want some more" into simply "S’more."

The history of S’mores stretches far back into time; although no one knows precisely when they first appeared on camping menus, the earliest published record dates back to 1927 in Loretta Scott Crew's book Tramping and Trailing with Girl Scouts.
