For many Australians, camping by the beach brings back cherished childhood memories. From the time I was born until I turned 17, we spent every summer holiday at the same campsite – from around December 23rd to January 21st.
We’d pack up our caravan and head to the beach for four whole weeks at the beautiful Inverloch Foreshore Reserve!

This was the same spot where my Mum camped since she was just 10 years old, and my grandparents did too! My grandfather camped there for so long that he knew exactly which trees to hang the colored lights from for our New Year’s Eve celebrations. Every summer, I danced the “Hokey Pokey” and did “The Seven Steps” with a handful of other families who also made this spot their home away from home. Santa always managed to track us down, which made each Christmas feel truly magical!

Back in the 70s and 80s, the big van with bunk beds in the back and a full annex was the go-to setup. There was always at least one campsite with a portable TV and an aerial strapped on top, desperately trying to catch good reception. If any of us kids needed to find our dads, they were usually gathered around a tiny 15-inch screen watching the Boxing Day Test!

Mum cooked up the best holiday dinners, though let's be honest, we probably would have eaten anything after a long day at the surf beach! And when Mum needed a break from cooking, it was always fish and chips on a park bench at the beach, with us kids defending our chips from the local seagulls!

These days, camping, caravanning, and motor homing have turned into a huge industry with endless options and luxuries.

My husband and I recently attended the caravanning show at the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds, and we were blown away! That humble caravan has transformed into a cozy home away from home!

Whether you’re in a tent, a camper van, a caravan, or a motorhome, falling asleep to the sound of the waves while camping by the beach is simply unbeatable.
