Yes they do!!!
I can’t speak for everywhere, but here in the Macedon Ranges our children apparently don’t feel the cold – it’s almost like they are immune to temperature. My son wore shorts to school every day of his life – as did most of the other kids, and still came home covered in icy cold mud at the end of the day.
But now that my 3 children have almost all finished school (we have 18 months to go!!!) I feel like I am quite the expert and can confidently say that almost all kids will absolutely love a hot lunch at school.
We’ve been using the same Thermos Brand flasks for over 12 years and they’re still going strong, they don’t look too flash (a lot of hard knocks in the bottom of a school bag!) but they still work, check out the photo!!
Here are some of my favourite lunch ideas that I can guarantee will be eaten!
- Special Fried Rice – I’d make it with minced chicken, a little extra soy and honey, and a couple of veges! Too easy. Eat it with a spoon and it’ll all go.
- Pasta – always make it with penne or spiral pasta so its easy for the kids to get out with a fork, the thought of spaghetti is nice but they’ll leave half of it behind.
- Sausages and gravy – an oldie but a goodie!! Super simple, cut up regular sausages, mushrooms, baby spinach and brown onion gravy. If your kids love mashed potatoes you can add some to the top of the flask, if you put in first it’ll be hard to get out with the fork.
- As my kids got older curry and stir fry were popular too.
Now before you all start shaking your head in disbelief, thinking that I woke up at the crack of dawn to prepare my little cherubs their delicious hot lunch . . . . ABSOLUTELY NOT!
I never did that – the beauty of the hot lunch in a flask is because it is always leftovers from the night before! Actually saving you time and mess in the kitchen before school.
Tip: Remember to heat your flask first with hot water, heat up the food, pour out the hot water, load up the food, lid on and it will be perfect for lunchtime!
